Emotronic

July 4, 2008

Oh come on- the tags for music just keep on getting more ridiculous!

Ok I know I have to explain what Folktronica is to people but Emotronic??? I had to explain to somebody today what Emo was in the first place. I think it says a lot that the only place I can find a definition is the Urban Dictionary which has definitions for quite a few dodgy words.

I originally saw this on the MySpace profile for a group called Biomusique who actually have some fairly decent ambient tunes so hopefully they are taking the piss by including the tag- something tells me that they were being serious though.

Illiteracy and Electric Picnic- UPDATED with LINEUP LINKS

March 4, 2008

[UPDATE- Click HERE for the post on the Lineup so far or HERE for the press release from the EP site.

The EP site itself isn’t the most user friendly at first glance but just wait a few seconds for the fit-inducing colours to fade and then you will see an area on the top left, second row down where you can click and it will bring up the lineup so far with the acts highlighted as to stature.  FYI- Tickets are €240 for the weekend camping pass-no single day passes as per the last couple of years.]

For those of you that have found me looking for an Electric Picnic lineup for 2008 with the following:

line up for electric picnic 2008

electric picnic 2008 line up

electric picnic line up 08

electric picnic 2008 lineup

electric picnic 08 lineup

Are you illiterate?? I changed the title on that post months ago to say ‘NO LINEUP YET’ and even made sure that you would see it in the google results so you wouldn’t have to bother to click.

So have patience, check here or just cuddle up to somebody in Pod/Aiken because you aren’t going to find what you want here until they actually release the lineup!

Timmy’s never seem to get a good deal

February 24, 2008

Noticed that one of the friends in Facebook joined this group about Timmy the Lamb on a cartoon about Sean the Sheep (thankfully I have not seen with the boys being older!)

The name Timmy has always been a pet peeve of mine- call me Tim, Timothy if you must but never Timmy.  Only my mother and sister can call me that without stern looks of consternation and possible threats of bodily harm.

Unfortunately the Timmy’s seem to fall into a few categories but usually are portrayed as being young and hapless.

From the gee-golly-willicker types of Timmy in the Lassie show and satirised in The Simpsons with Bart pretending to be Timmy who fell down a well.   Other more recent clueless Timmy’s are in the instructional film in Dodgeball (Scroll down to Uber Film Narrator) and the Timmy in Fairly Odd Parents who wishes for everything that will cause devastation.

And last but not least the one that I have been getting for the last while…

Timmaaay from Southpark…funny show but there are only so many times I can stand Timmaaay being shouted at me!

Justifiable Homicide

January 16, 2008

As seen on Jim Carrolls blog yesterday…

Where is the line that has to be crossed to make a homicide justifiable?
Have a look here and you will understand….if my boys even thought of behaving like that they would be breathing dirt.
I blame the parents of course but it is a shame that this type of behaviour has reached these shores.  Unfortunately, with money Ireland has changed and not always for the better.

Gigs, friends and new years resolutions

December 22, 2007

I am extremely disappointed that none of my friends could make it to the gig last night- it has come to the point where I will no longer be trying to contact them and will just become a gig bachelor.  I have already been to quite a few gigs by myself this year since I don’t know until the last minute if I will be able to go so it is not really going to make a big difference.  As well, with the boys my time for going out is limited and increasingly I like to go out for gigs over just meeting up in the pub.  Most gigs are reasonably priced so it does not cost a fortune to hear good live music instead of some dodgy dj with dreadful pop rubbish.  Fair enough, it is Christmas and lots of friends were either going down to the country or out of the country but this is not the first time it has happened.  Unfortunately I do not have a group of like minded school friends to fall back on when it comes to music- 3000 miles and 15 years ago is a bit of a problem there.

So I was left with trying to give away a ticket last night (bought them 6wks back)- harder than you can imagine actually.  There was no que at the doors to the venue so went into Whelans (the pub) to warm up and see if there was anybody I recognized that might need it- the tickets were only a tenner each so no real loss but I just hate to see it go to waste.  Always hard to tell in Whelans who is actually going into the venue since it is a popular drinking spot in its own right- I did recognize some Phantom people and eventually went over to see if they need one since this wasn’t a Phantom sponsored night.  I am not a media type and I have never bothered to see who gets tickets for what or even who is affiliated with whom- I would presume that they get into all of the smaller venues around town for free but asked just in case.

Not a good idea for me to talk to anybody when I am sick since I am very cynical and it shows in the conversation or email.  Unfortunately for me the only time I have talked/emailed Pete I have been sick so he is probably left with impression that I am unhinged.  It doesn’t help that I have been far too enthusiastic in emailing Phantom- after 14 years of hearing rubbish radio I have just been so happy to hear the type of music I love.  Unfortunately for me, email is like breathing- since college 20 years ago mailing people on the LANs in ASCII  I have been in contact with people electronically and popping off an email is second nature.

Anyway with the ticket- it was still early by Irish gig standards (doors at 7:30 and it was 8 but Lauren said she was going to be on then) and still no que outside so I gave it to a smoker who said their brothers second cousin or somebody could use it.  At least I felt it didn’t go to waste.

So new years resolutions:

1)  Don’t ask friends out for gigs

2) No emails to Phantom (except for Kiosk YouTube recommendations)

EDIT- Just had a look at the Phantom website and the guys I asked about the tickets are Brian Daly who is Head of Marketing and Sinister Pete who is not just a DJ but is also Director of Programming.  Feel very foolish indeed since offering them a ticket is like offering ice cubes to the Eskimos.

Vodafone add and rant about advertising in general

December 5, 2007

This has been bugging me for a while since I have seen the Vodafone ads mostly in the cinema over the last couple of months.  At first I thought it was just another add for their phones but the latest add has been pushing mobile internet and how this should fill in the empty spaces of time in your life.  Now I am not one to complain about being plugged in since I am nearly always near a computer and have even been thinking of getting an internet tablet so that I can pick up hotspots in work (cant get outside email with the firewalls) but I think this add has overstepped the mark.  Its one thing to show you products and how they can be used but this add is implying that these periods of time are meaningless and unproductive.  On the contrary I think that we need to have these times to relax without being bombarded by more media bumph and insidious advertising.  Otherwise when are we meant to think and to reflect on issues that will affect us and in turn our social structure as a whole?

As it is media and advertising have too strong a hold on modern society…particularly in the States where even sports stadiums have been renamed by some corporate brand just for the money.  Ireland as well has become worse over the last couple of years- the radio and tv stations have repetitive adds that have me reaching for the remote quite quickly (Sunday Business Post is one where every week it’s the same annoying music and the same dramatic tone whatever the issue).  It just seems that things are being pushed into our faces by the media and advertising at every turn and that everything has a spin these days where something is being made out of nothing.

After reading Nadine’s excellent article on the Kindle I wonder if they will even try to sneak adds into the books that you would read on this device.   It would be handy but I am not quite sold on an electronic version of a book where constant connectivity can open up the possibility that content and advertising can be ‘pushed’ towards you.  (Actually just having read the spec I realized that it is not just the Kindle but the AmazonKindle- corporate branding says it all really and I was surprised to see a video with Neil Gaiman touting its virtues).

To get back to the original point- I do think that it is important to have moments in our lives where we can have some peace and quiet to relax and to actually think on our own.  Being connected is a part of everyday life now and I will probably stay plugged in a good part of the time- but a note to the advertisers, please don’t lecture me on how my down time is meaningless.
