Codes- Tower RecordsMarch 9, 2008
Got a tip off from my music dealer that Codes were going to be in Tower and having an unexpected free night I went in for a listen. First impressions are that they are really good…and young…its one thing when you know that you are twice the age of the gig-goers but another thing altogether when you know that you are probably twice the age of the band themselves! I had better get use to it since there are some really great young groups coming up these days.
The set itself was quite good and they played quite a few tunes which I was surprised since the Tower affairs are usually short enough. Don’t have anything to link them into but this was the order: Known World, Memorial, Edith, Guided By Ghosts, Starry Night, Truer Words, Cities, Four Winters and the new single This is Goodbye.
I think that the tunes that they have with the keyboard and synths are really the standout ones with Known World and Guided By Ghosts being my favourites. A few of the tunes have some soaring vocals that are reminiscent of the defunct JJ72 which is a good comparison since I really liked them. The new single is quite good as well and it seems like there is enough material for an album so presume that won’t be long in the making.
For a proper gig they will be in Whelans on the 20th of March and their official site is here for additional information.
