Children Of Glory (Szabadság, szerelem)April 26, 2008
Children Of Glory is a Hungarian film about the the nations water polo team and the events of the Hungarian uprising. Really this is simply a love story with the backdrop of the water polo team- the only time you actually see them playing though is at the beginning and end of the film- both times against the Russians. It is great to see that a Hungarian movie has been made about the uprising although doubtless there has been some artistic freedom in the telling of the story and quite a few stereotypes that had to be included.
The acting is well done and the two leads Kata Dobó and Iván Fenyö give the story some weight. At times it was a believable story but other times it was far too staged. The action sequences are done well though and fairly realistic. What I liked most about the story was the uncertainty of the lovers having a happy ending…you know that the water polo team will win the gold medal but you only find out in the last scenes about the fate of the lovers.
I don’t usually compare films but what I can’t get out of my head is that this is a Black Book film…trying to be something for everybody and not quite living up to the promise.
