New Years Eve 07- A Tale of Four Seasons

January 8, 2008

Has taken me a while to get to this but with one thing or another I haven’t had much time to actually sit down and type.  As the title suggests- four pubs that I was at and the feelings to match the seasons in each.  Thought it was going to be a quiet enough night but it didn’t turn out like that!

The International
Went into town to meet Gary from work for a couple of drinks and met up with some of the people that I had been down to Electric Picnic as well- John and his girlfriend Julie…and some of her friends Caroline, Justin, and Emma.  So quite a group when I was expecting to have only a few drinks.  John, Julie and Co were smart though and went off for something to eat…hindsight is always great but I should have done that!  So just Gary and I having a couple of more before we meet up with them later when a friend of Gary comes into the pub and we are there for another 2 hours with them before moving on.  This is definitely the springtime of the night since the body and head feel nice and fresh with the happiness of the neat vodka starting to warm up the body quiet nicely:-)

John, Julie and Co decided to go to Dakota after they ate- must say it was the quietest I have ever seen Dakota and was quite surprised but it was great since you could actually talk.  Great to talk with Caroline and Emma…really lovely girls and was great chatting with Emma about music since I didn’t have to explain anything at all!  Rarely happens that you can mention Nialler9 without having to say who he  is…actually told her about the blog as well which I don’t usually do so she must have charmed that out of me (yes Emma if you are reading this I am just trying to butter you up!)  So the summer of the night- laidback, relaxing, and internally warm:-)

The Front Lounge
Went there with Gary after Dakota since he wanted one drink in a gay bar before he got the bus- it should be noted that we were there for him!  I can empathise with women being eyed up and down and the hard stares from men- I feel like a piece of meat whenever we go there and it is actually difficult trying to get eye contact with the straight women while avoiding eye contact with the men.  Also met friends of friends who I haven’t seen in years so had a couple of drinks with them as well.  They reminded me of the first time I had met them- a rather infamous house party where they had tried to turn me and it so obviously did not work.  Great music in the place…lots of Depeche Mode as is to be expected.  Definitely the autumn of the evening…still warm but getting just a wee bit darker and you can feel winter starting to set in.

Phantasm- The Village
Didn’t have a ticket for the Phantasm or the gig in Whelans but decided to walk up that direction for a pub called Anseo that I remembered Lauren Guillery was going to be playing at.  It is just past Whelans/Village so decided to pop around the entrance of those venues to see if there was any buzz…rounded the corner and there was a girl that was getting rid of her ticket for the Village since she was going into Whelans so I was sorted there!  Had 10+ vodkas at this stage with nothing to eat so the head was starting to pound just a wee bit.  Noticed Pete straight off so had a quick chat with him and also a very quick chat with Eavann and Nadine- didn’t want to have an in depth conversation as I would have liked since I knew that I wouldn’t be able to last long.

The place was packed which is great to see for a Phantasm!  I had missed the first group (Red Kids) but I had seen them at the last Phantasm so I knew I probably wouldn’t have heard anything new…they were a last minute replacement for A Lazurus Soul which would have been good to see live.  I hid myself towards the back so that I wasn’t blocking people and ended up playing eye hockey with a redhead that looked very familiar-still can’t remember where I have seen her before.

Betamax format came on and were good- played their couple of tracks that get the radio play and then some of their longer jamming tracks…kind of dark ambient but just doesn’t seem to have a hook.  Great visuals though with scenes from Vanishing Point/Deathproof playing in the background!

Fight Like Apes then came on with some rather funky sunglasses with lights and their usual sense of ‘this is my style so fuck you’ attitude- brilliant:-)  Great songs from them again- have heard them a couple of times this year and they always put on a great show.  I was approached by a lovely girl called Louise who was wondering why I was not smiling….great when somebody takes an interest but was truthful and told her I needed Solpadeine!  Loving the music but the head really starting to pound.  Of course she commented on my height but then she noticed the size of my feet and took numerous pics…and she asked the usual line of what they say about big feet being true…since I can’t tell a lie I had to give it to her straight…big feet….big socks;-)

Pete came on the decks a short while later and I must say he was rocking!  Played some great old school hits and really had his finger on the pulse of the crowd to get them moving.  Pete was moving quite a bit himself up on the stage and I was just waiting for him to body surf into the crowd!  Some excellent tunes anyway but when he hit a quieter streak my automatic pilot came on and I just had to go for the bus.  So definitely the winter of the night with the felling of a darkness that is never going to end!

Had a great night all in all even if I wasn’t actually feeling the best the next day…only had three hours sleep as well since the body woke me up for more Solpadeine!  The best nights are the ones where you don’t expect it but thankfully it doesn’t happen every time:-)

New Years Eve Gigs…undecided….and now sold out!

December 30, 2007

Am a bit torn as to which gig to go to on New Years Eve- it’s a toss up between the Phantasm in the Village and Jape in Whelans.  The venues are right next to each other so it looks like it will be a coin toss when I get there.  Haven’t seen Jape so I am leaning towards Whelans but Fight Like Apes will be in the Phantasm and even though I have seen them twice already this year they are bloody good!  Other post on Phantasm here.

[EDIT] Looks like they are both sold out so that is what I get for being indecisive!!

Phantasm- November

November 19, 2007

Another month, another great Phantasm!  Was a bit quieter than normal with the lousy weather but a decent crowd in the end.  The lineup was fairly good with Superjimenez, The Radio, and Red Kid.  Superjimenez were excellent and I really like their vibe- some great tracks that have some airplay and a shame that they were on first since the crowd wasn’t huge at that stage.  The Radio I have mixed feelings about since I saw them in the Sugarclub- they can have some catchy tunes but there is just no punch to them at all- radio friendly is the nicest thing I can say about them (not particularly a compliment).  Red Kid was superb- nearing on gypsie rock on occasion and really great to get the crowd going- lead singer had a bit of dancing with the crowd just to make sure!  Afterwards some great tunes on the decks by the excellent Derek Byrne of Album Archive and The Lounge on Phantom.

Radio City itself is a great place to have it- like the layout and you can usually manage to see the band- probably not suited for some of the bigger groups but perfect for that night.  Had a chat with Derek and some of the other Phantom people I hadn’t met properly before- Brian from sales and Eavann who I had actually talked to at the last one when she was dressed as Amy Winehouse and I didn’t twig that it was her!  She pointed out the fantastic guy up next to the stage who was doing something that could be construed as dancing- it really defies description as to how he was moving but was a good spectacle.  I will never feel embarrassed by my moves again!! Saying that I didn’t make it to the dance floor with the migraine brewing- never a good thing when you are out!  Had a chat with Tayna as well who I have bumped into a couple of times but unsurprisingly in Radio City since she books the groups there.  There is another night at Radio City called Revolver that will have The Minutes and would love to see them but am going to France soon so the gigs will have to wait!

Phantasm and other gigs October

November 5, 2007

Originally posted in other blog…

Has been a while and only typing here now after coming back from the most excellent Phantasm in Whelans so I dont type long drunk rambling emails to the presenters that I met! Was definitely the best Phantasm since I have started going- great groups, great vibe, and was great to actually chat with some of the presenters whose shows I like. Really sound people I must say and looking forward to the next one!

Now- down to business with the gigs. The only big one that I have managed to make it to recently was LCD Soundsystem in Tripod. Managed to get a ticket when they moved the venue and released some extra ones. Saw them at Electric Picnic but they were just superb in Tripod. Definitely better to see them indoors than out- had a great vibe going the whole nite and even though with the slow songs at the end you just wanted them to keep on going! Met some non-gig friends afterwards and had to put up with a shite DJ but you cant have everything!!

Have been to see some of the smaller Irish groups recently as well. Took the boys down to Tower to see Dark Room Notes. Really like their music since I saw them in Crawdaddy a good few months back. Was great to bring the boys along as well for once- great to show them what a live band is like. The oldest had a few words with the drummer which is great since he and his brother are taking drumming lessons….and I am going to get some custom earplugs made courtesy of a Dr friend!!
Also took Nadia (Russian friend) to Lauren Guillery and the Claws (along with Ojos Robos and Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters) Lauren was her usual excellent self and Nadia quite liked her as well. Wasnt really into Ojos Robos but the Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters had a great sound. Very small turnout for that gig but was still good…deaf afterwards though!

Now to Phantasm- twas Phantom Fm’s 1st birthday party so the had a bash in Whelans with The Chapters, Neosupervital and The Future Kings of Spain. Great crowd tonight- some of the other Phantasms have been hit and miss depending on the groups but tonight was right on the button. The Chapters had a couple of good songs but as a whole they were just missing something. Neosupervital were quite good and love the electric 80’s vibe they have. The Future Kings of Spain just rocked and nobody was going to stop them!! Defintely best group of the night and they deserve all the talk I have heard about them.

Met so many of the Phantom presenters as well- first saw Pearl downstairs (excellent Sunday morning show) and then when I wandered upstairs I saw the excellent Nadine O’Regan (Kiosk on Saturday morning-best show in my books by far) Had a good chat with her and then met Derek Byrne (Album archive and Bedrock on Sunday nights) and had a good chat with him as well. Derek actually brought me over to where some of the Phantom people were and introduced me to a few others….some of them I admit I cant remember (especially not when I am typing this at 3 in the morning with just a weee bit too much vodka!) but met Laura Lee Conboy (Spiral Stares on Wed night), Not so Sinister Pete (Pure morning), Louise Mannion (news), Brian Daly (something management). Must say they are all really geniune people and the enthusiasm they have in their shows really shows when you meet them.
Was then having a chat with a sexy Shelly but had to run at that stage so didnt quite last to the bitter end but close! Had a week without the boys since they were in Portugal and have to collect them from the airport tomorrow…will hopefully be sober by then! And then there is the gig tomorrow night….Idlewild in the Village! Have been listening to them for years so cant wait!! It only dawned on me today that the boys plane might be late and I will not be a happy camper if I miss this! Anyway- off to bed…know that I will post a few things on Myspace and Facebook tomorrow but at least they wont be drunken ramblings….ramblings maybe but not drunken:-)
